Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Being a first time parent is certainly difficult but it can also be a challenge to be a first time grandparent. It is not at all the same and requires some getting used to and some preparation. New grandparents may worry that they EC Comics not ready to care for their grandchildren, especially in a home filled with breakables and medications. But there are many things you can do to ease the stress when the grandkids come to visit. First time grandparents need to stay calm and remember that if they raised children, they can certainly handle grandchildren.

A grandparent’s home Bakugan has many little trinkets and cupboards that are not safe for small children to get into. Make it a point to baby proof your home before the young grandchildren come over. Put breakables up out of reach and be sure that all medicine cabinets are locked. This is also a great time to put plastic protectors in all of the electrical outlets to keep small fingers out of places they don’t belong.

It’s a good idea to have a carbon monoxide detector in your home as well as the traditional smoke detector. Carbon monoxide cannot be detected by things like sight or smell Easy Bake Oven it’s something that everyone should have whether they have children in the home or not. Things like this can save your life so consider the benefits.

Keep a toy supply at your home for your grandchildren to play with while they are there. By having a toy area just for them, they will look forward to all of the toys they get to play with when they visit. Toss in a new one when they come if you don’t see Bakugan often or if it’s a special occasion. Blankets and movies also make great items that the kids will look forward to using at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

Craft items make the perfect activity. Keep a steady supply of crayons on hand along with construction paper, sparkles, glue and all other great craft supplies that kids love. You will be overjoyed when they present you with a picture made just for you. Finger painting is a fun thing you can all do together or try teaching them how to sew.

Keep a variety of safe and healthy snacks on hand for hungry kids. Though grandparents have become known for spoiling kids, you should also have healthy alternatives. Fruit and multigrains sure do go a long way in giving kids the energy that they need to keep playing hard all day.

It’s really important to enforce all of the rules that are laid out by the parents for kids. Those rules are there for a reason and by letting kids disobey them you show them that they can do whatever they want when they are in your care. This will lead to disrespect which is something that you do not want.

Being a good grandparent comes from the heart before it comes from anywhere else. Don’t waste time worrying about the little things. Love and devotion makes the best grandparent any kid could ask for.

Evaluating Collectibles - What You Should Know

Friday, February 27th, 2009

There are people in all walks toys life and in all countries around the globe that are passionate collectors. The ranges of items that are collected vary from arts to antiques, butterflies to beer mugs, coins to comics, dolls to bricks - the list is almost endless. The common denominator among all these collectors is the need to correctly evaluate and maintain their collectibles.

The starting point when considering venturing into the world of collecting toys be the thorough researching of the items you wish to collect. Find out as much as there is to know about the specific collectibles. Size of editions, artists, materials, tools, and eras are a few of the basics you would need to know. If the items you wish to collect require special maintenance make sure you know and understand exactly what this entails as this will ensure that you do not inadvertently cause damage to your collection Without sufficient knowledge you will never be in a position to properly evaluate or maintain your collection.

Evaluating Collectibles

In determining whether the price of a particular item is reasonable there are various factors that must be taken into consideration. Depending on the type of collectible these will have a varying degree of influence on the price. Supply and demand for a specific article will invariably be a major determinant of its current monetary value. Do not rely on the prices fetched for these items at online auctions as these only represent a small group of potential buyers for a specific and usually very brief period of time, besides which they may be either understated or inflated. There are price guides available for a number of different types of collectibles. The one thing to remember is that they are only guides and there are numerous other factors that will influence the current value of any given collectible.

Factors that will have an influence on the value of a collectible.

Age & Rarity: Scarcity normally increases proportionately with age and therefore the potential value of an item is usually influenced by its age. The older an item the less likelihood there is that there are many similar items that have survived through the passage of time and available for purchasing. These items invariably have interesting stories associated with them. The owners of older items with a rich history are less willing to sell and this toy guns increases the value of those that are offered for sale on the market. However this is not true of all collectibles as the other most important criteria that must be met is that there must still be a demand for these items. Bear in mind that in the collectibles market there have through the years been lots of fads that are sought after one day and forgotten the next. These items rarely ever regain their original value once the collectibles market perceives them as history.

Limited Edition: Almost all serious collectors will do research into the number of identical articles that were manufactured when considering the purchase of a collectible. All collectibles are not created equal when it comes to edition size. Most items that become valuable collectibles were made in a limited edition. Being part of a limited edition means that these items initially sell out reasonably fast and become a rarity in a relatively short period. Items that have no limit will appear in a company catalog for many years and will take much longer, if ever, to appreciate in value.

History (Provenance): Any information regarding the origin of a collectible could add to its value, more so if this information is from an official source and the item has a rich and interesting history. If the item has been housed in a collectibles or art museum or has ever been made mention of in an official record this will of course support the value ascribed to it.

Condition & Packaging: Most original buyers of items that later became a collectible would not have kept the article in its original packaging and would have not known the value of keeping the packaging. This has resulted in an element of rarity if an item is available with its original packaging, which would denote the manufacturer and year of manufacture. These collectibles are often referred top as “mint in box” when offered for sale. It goes without saying that the better the condition of the item (less flaws such as excessive wear, rust, tears, missing pieces) the more value and interest it will attract. Items that look almost new will be referred to as “mint”. Most collectors rank condition the most important criteria in collecting.

Finally if in any doubt it is important to rather get professional advice and get the collectible appraised. There are many licensed appraisers who specialize in the various markets of collectibles and it is better to pay a good appraiser than to either pay more than what the item is or ever will be worth, or worse yet, to walk away from a purchase only to find out that it was that once in a lifetime find that will probably never repeat itself.

Once you have evaluated the collectible item and decided that it is correctly priced, in good condition and will fit perfectly into your collection, remember to insure the article if it is of substantial value and to add this item to your collection inventory.

Happy Collecting!

How to Learn Bookbinding

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Many people are discovering the art of bookbinding and its uses. They are sparing time to find and learn bookbinding. Who thought that bookbinding was such an easy thing to do? Most of the people may not even know about the simplicity of this method. You may also have found about this thing accidentally and now you want to learn bookbinding perfectly. There is a lot written about it and still being written. You find several pages on the internet dealing with some form of bookbinding. In this article let me give you some tips on learning to bind your own books.

There are many ways of binding a book. Just look in your home. You will find American Girls collection books which may be hardbound Action Man paperback or just stapled. All these are various types of bookbinding. Obviously you have to practice different methods to become perfect at them. You can start with the simplest and work your way to the difficult ones.

First of all you must have the material and equipment. As a beginner you can start with these things

  • sharp thing to make holes ( an awl )
  • large needle
  • thread ( carpet thread, nylon thread etc. )
  • glue ( pva, or any strong glue )
  • paper clamp ( to hold papers together tightly )
  • cardboard or corrugated paper
  • ream of papers

Keep all the above things at a certain place so that you can find them at any time.

The best way to learn something is to start small. This will help you to get the basics right and if you do something wrong then the loss will be minimal. The first thing you have to make for a book is signatures. Signature is nothing but folded paper. You can make signatures with one paper or two or more as you wish. Every book will have several signatures which are fastened together. This can be done by sewing the signatures together and then applying glue on the spine or just by applying the glue. The stack of fastened signatures forms the internal of the book.

A cover attached to the book will make it complete. The various types of covers are paperback, hard covers, leather and other types. Most of us will have paperback and hardbound books. Here’s what you can do to understand bookbinding better, take a book which is old and you no longer need it. Tear it apart slowly and see the inside. This way you will know the inner workings of binding a book. At last, I can say that to learn bookbinding you need correct knowledge, all the materials and a good practice.

RV Storage Compartments and 3 Easy Ways for Thieves to Prosper

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Outside accessible storage space is G I Joe 1980’s boon to the modern RVer.

Why clutter up your interior storage cabinets? Now Easy Bake Oven have outside accessible storage capacity that will eliminate the hassles and bothers of stowing all your necessary gear inside. This compartment is just the 1956 Topps baseball cards size for that, and that compartment is just made for this. You can put your new golf clubs and bags in here…

So says the sales brochure…but…

Out side accessible storage space is also a boon to the many various “low-lifes” and rip-off artists of our society. While thefts from your RV may not be an issue while parked in a crowded RV park, what about the times you are parked in a crowded Walmart parking lot? Who would question someone rooting around in a motorhome or trailer storage compartment in some supermarket parking lot? Would you?

Think about what you have stored in those compartments; that $300 fly rod that is too long to fit in the inside closet; that video camera with all the accessories, bags and batteries; your 35mm camera, tripod, and flash; the new tool set you just bought; the new portable barbecue with the auto-igniter, spare tanks, and on and on…

Did you know that I have the keys to your storage compartments in my pocket? Take out your key ring, right now, and examine your compartment key. does it have a number stamped on it? And would that number be, say,CH751 or ES201? You know, with those keys, you could probably open your neighbors compartments, the compartments in the trailer next in line, and so on, to the end of the row.

And, speaking about keys, does your entry door have a locking mechanism with two places to lock the door (one to lock the handle and one to throw the dead bolt)? The one that locks the handle will be marked with a C or an E and is a universal type of lock. In other words, my C or E passkey will unlock your trailer if you use only this lock. Every RV salesman, technician or manufacturer has a passkey for this one lock. Any crook could obtain this key with very little or no difficulty.

Not that I’m not saying that RV salespeople, technicians, or manufacturers are crooks, but the keys are out there and therefore are susceptible. Use your deadbolt lock, or better yet, install a quality after market deadbolt lock.

I also have a key that will fit 90% of all the compartments on most RVs built since 1965. Most of the time, these older compartment locks could be opened with an ordinary screwdriver or a dime or any object small enough to insert into the keyway.

Now, if I was a thief, any possession that you have stored in those compartments could be mine in a matter of seconds. Also, consider that once I have access to the inside of that compartment, it is an easy matter to lift out the dinette cover, or tip up the sofa, or kick in a panel to gain access to the inside of the unit.

Take a good look at your trailer or motorhome and view it as if you had locked your keys inside somehow. How many ways can you see of gaining access to the interior? Now think of 1954 Dan-Dee baseball cards many ways you could break into that RV if you were not concerned with destruction of any kind. How about that roof vent? It consists of a plastic lid that can easily be ripped off, a nylon screen that you could poke your finger through, and a 14″ x 14″ opening to shinny through. And, you know, there is a convenient ladder right on the back of that trailer for a thief to use!

The compartment door is usually made of an aluminum frame with a skin of sheet aluminum on the exterior and possibly some kind of insulation sandwiched between an inner skin of aluminum. A good swift kick to any part of the door would be sufficient to cave in these defenses. The locking mechanism consists of a tab that slides into a corresponding groove on the frame when the key is turned. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that a flat bar inserted between the frame and the door can pop this lock in seconds. Not exactly Fort Knox, is it?

You simply have to take an active part in your own security. Make sure your valuables are inside and out of sight, preferably in some sort of safe. They make those to put in the floors, you know. And you might start thinking about installing alarms at any Donkey Kong of entry, i.e.; outside compartment doors, windows, etc. If you do, make sure they are L-O-U-D! Think about outside lighting, too. Motion sensors are good. Those crooks don’t like light and they sure don’t like noise. Make it tough on them and they’ll go elsewhere. Now…don’t you feel better?

If You’re a Senior and Need a Website, This Senior-Friendly Advice May Be Your Best Bet

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

My answers below Hamilton Invaders these simple questions will help you decide whether a do-it-yourself website template or a programmer is Howard the Duck right choice.

1. Will you know how to use the computer well enough to set up your own website business online?

Do you know how to copy and paste on the computer? Do you shop and make purchases online? Do you send and receive emails? Do you search online for any information? Do you have a digital camera? Do you play any games online? Do you pay your bills online?

If you answered yes to any two of these questions, you probably have enough computer knowledge to get yourself started in your online business.

2. How much time do you have? Is it enough to get a website up and running?

Using a hired programmer to build your website to your specifications can take up to Godaikin months to a year or longer. It depends on how complex you want your site or how well you can get your ideas across to your programmer. Get a guarantee that the programmer will finish the website on time for the money that you agreed to pay.

Using a good do-it-yourself template website, as a senior you can have it up and running in an hour or less. Putting your personal information in may take you up to a couple more hours, depending on how fast you type or if you just “hunt and peck” your letters.

3. Will it 1888 Allen and Ginter easy enough for you to understand the computer language?

You should ask questions first before you hire a programmer to make sure the programmer understands your ideas even if you aren’t using the right computer words or computer jargon. If you hire programmers from another country, watch out for the language barrier.

Ask all programmers for examples of other websites they have built that you can go visit. Also, your life will be made much easier if the programmer does all your future editing and updates. BUT you need to find out how often they do updates and how much money that will cost you.

Do-it-yourself websites are made to be more senior-friendly. Check for plenty of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), an email address or a telephone number so you can ask your extra questions. Check the fine print, with a magnifying glass if you have to, to make sure you do not need to know any computer code like HTML.

You are usually guided through these do-it-yourself projects using very little, if any, computer language. It would be even less complicated for you if you could find entire do-it-yourself website packages where you will be guided through getting your domain name, your website, and your web hosting all from one place.

Extra Senior Tip: Your domain name is your address or business name which (like rel=”nofollow” targettarget) points to your website, your website is your on-line office or store, and your web hosting is where your website is stored until it is put online for the rest of the world to see. These are all absolutely necessary when you need a website for an online business.

4. Can you afford this on just your Social Security income?

You will definitely not be able to afford a programmer-built website on just your Social Security income. A programmer from another country may give you a cheaper quote to build your website, but you may have difficulty getting your ideas across to them because of a language barrier. That may cost you extra in the end. To get a professional website built and designed, you can pay from $300 to literally thousands of dollars initially. To make even the slightest extra change or update after it’s built could easily cost you $75 to $250.

Do-it-yourself websites may cost anywhere from zero dollars to hundreds of dollars. Be very leery of the free ones. You may not be able to make the website about your own business or personalize it. You can get a good quality do-it-yourself web site package deal for around $100. This should include your domain name, your website, web hosting, with no extra charges for anytime updates.

And when you need a website with easy-to-use templates specifically for seniors, your one stop shop could be as simple as checking out: whoisdirectoryneedawebsite/whoisdirectoryneedawebsite/
