In Exodus Chapter 21, Moses has led the people of Israel out of Egypt, and now they are at Mount Sinai where the Ten Commandments have been given, and Hawaii Lemon Laws have seen how these people were to prepare themselves to hear and receive the Word of God, and that Word of God comes through a man to the people.
It has been suggested on good authority that these Chapters are probably the first part of the Bible to be written down - Chapters 19 and 21 to 24 - and yet they can be so neglected and overlooked - but when we read this section we see that it is most interesting and so very relevant.
We often hear of people discovering some ancient document and you see that they are so very pleased to read interest rate card and handle that old manuscript. When we hold the Bible in our hands it is good to take a moment and to realise that we are holding a miracle.
When a prophet comes to us with the Word of God, we always have two choices. We either receive the Word of God, and welcome the Word of God, or we reject the Word of God and stone the prophet. Of course, we always have to check that it is the Word of God! This continues right into the New Testament - every time Jesus Christ is preached and proclaimed in the power of the Holy Spirit.
This section has been called the Book of the Covenant. We are a people of the book, and that has been said a lot recently. We do not worship it, but we hold to its teaching and revelation as being authentic and reliable and authoritative.
Our faith in Jesus Christ is based upon this Book, and from the Bible we learn that our Creator God is a God Who talks, and Who has spoken to men.
Moses at first recited these Commandments and Laws - the Holy Spirit can do wonders with a man’s memory. Jesus taught us that - that the Holy Spirit would bring to the forefront of our memories what He said and taught. The Holy Spirit brings before us things we need to know and remember.
God is so concerned about so many of the details of our day by day living, and that is so clear and obvious from these pages.
He is concerned about arguments and disputes which we might have - about relationships - and God reveals how He feels about certain matters. Remember the words of the Psalmist - O how I love thy law - I meditate upon it day and night.
This law which came through Moses deals with people and property. It spoke so directly on so many issues - particularly to credit card apply community.
It refers to what has been done to a dog or to any animal that is dangerous, and these various principles can be applied today.
Every law court case depends upon this Book - “I promise to tell the truth” - and that is said on the basis of this Book - not on any other Book.
A man cannot be loyal to God without being loyal to His Word.
We cannot say - O I believe in God, but I cannot believe His Book. This is why the Bible means so much to those of us who come regularly to worship the Living God. We know and recognise just how much we depend upon this Word which can be relied upon totally.
We need to consider at times the absolute importance of the Word of God today.
Be totally committed to the written Word. The Word of God is designed to bring us closer to the God of the Word - and for us that means closer to Jesus Christ.
We make our decisions on the basis of the Word of God.
When we are building our life in Christ, we need to build on a good sound solid foundation, which no man can shake. We can build with divine material - and then we will be able and are able to withstand the storms when they come - not, if they come, but when they come.
We tirelessly read and seek to study the Word of God. Now, we may not always do these things - but we always need to be reminded of them - because, as we feed upon the Word of God, we will grow - and our faith will increase and deepen - and our character will develop.
God does not let the Word yield its secrets easily to people who are lazy. But as you allow the Word of God to dwell in you richly, there will be imperceptible growth.
The rain- the sunshine - and so many other ingredients will all contribute to the growth of the seed and the maturity of the individual. As we receive these ingredients that contribute to growth - the growing process happens - growth in grace - growth in maturity - it is a process - not a crisis - it doesn’t just suddenly happen.
If a man does not know the Word of God, he is in trouble - and when we consider the nation, if man does not know the Word of God, the nation, the community, society are all in trouble. If you know what Jesus says to us through the Word then things happen, not only is there growth and maturity, but the Word influences our behaviour and our attitudes.
